We are kicking off this new year with a strong desire and action plans geared toward putting Africa firmly on the Bitcoin and Lightning network map. We no longer want to be led by the rest of the world into opportunities or innovations, we want to take the lead, and take bold steps to end the inequalities that plague us. Not only that, we want to export innovations and lead on Bitcoin!
Africa must win in every single sphere of life including the Lightning network, so we have taken it upon ourselves to light up Africa on the Lightning node world map!
We are bent on lighting up the lightning node map one node at a time, as affordable as possible, starting with Africa Free Routing which we are still working hard to host on African soil, and now Nigeria Free Routing hosted in Lagos Nigeria, and proudly African! More details are below.

1. Human Rights Foundation announces 3 African projects as recipients of Bitcoin Development Funds
Human Rights Foundation has announced thirteen recipients for their Bitcoin development funds. 3 out of the 13 are African projects and they include: Bitcoin Mountain from Cameroon, African Bitcoin Conference and We are all Satoshi. Click here to read more.
2. Morroco is set to pass a Crypto Regulation Bill
The Governor of Bank Al-Maghrib (BAM), Abdellatif Jouahiri has said that the adoption of crypto by Moroccan residents is now inevitable hence a regulatory framework is needed. The governor said a draft crypto law, which seeks to protect individuals from the risks associated with crypto trading is ready and will be distributed to the public soon. Click here to read more.
3. Nigeria, Cameroon, and Ghana top the world in “How to Buy Bitcoin” Google searches in 2022

4. 91% of Cryptos from 2014 have died, while Bitcoin continues to thrive
According to a recent report by CoinKickoff, 91% of coins established in 2014 eventually died due to low trade volume or abandonment. Click here to read more.
5. Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya Account for 65% of Africa’s 55 Million Crypto Holders
A study released in December 2022 has shown that Africa has a total of 55.3 million cryptocurrency holders across 33 countries, with just three countries, Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya accounting for approximately 36.14 million of the total number, which comes to about 65% or two-thirds of the number. We are happy to announce a groundbreaking achievement for our team. Our zero fee routing node Africa Free Routing has officially launched Nigerian Free Routing! Nigeria is finally on the global lightning network payments map with the launch of the node which is currently located in Lagos! Check it out here.
