1. IMF Advises Zimbabwe Against Digital Tokens Idea, Urges for Monetary Measures Instead
The IMF advises Zimbabwe against adopting a gold-backed digital currency to address macro-economic challenges, including currency volatility. Instead, the IMF suggests liberalizing Zimbabwe’s foreign exchange market. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) began selling digital tokens in May 2023 for $5 for individuals and $5,000 for corporates and institutions. The IMF requires a careful assessment to determine if the benefits outweigh the costs and potential risks. The digital tokens aim to stabilize the Zimbabwe dollar and offer an alternative to the U.S. dollar. Read more.
2. Ethiopia Joins Egypt in Seeking BRICS Membership
Ethiopia, along with Egypt and Algeria, is applying to join the BRICS economic bloc to ensure its national interests. The Ethiopian Foreign Affairs Ministry believes joining a global institution will help advance Ethiopia’s national interests.
