1. Africa-focused Bitcoin firm Paxful announces closure
Paxful, a global Bitcoin marketplace with strong roots in Africa, is shutting down operations and returning funds to users due to mass staff exits and increasing regulatory issues. CEO Ray Youssef cited mass staff exits and increasing regulatory issues as reasons for the company’s closure. Reports suggest that infightings may have contributed to the company’s problems. 2. Bitcoin shakes up the money supply in Central America and Africa (Op-Ed)
Bitcoin is being adopted by users all over the world, with Africa and Central America being two of the most promising regions for growth. In Africa, nearly 50% of residents are unbanked, making bitcoin a more stable store of value. Lightning Network’s low-bandwidth, low-fee BTC payment platform is a gamechanger for Africa, making it more accessible and affordable. The Lightning Network enables users to send and receive bitcoin payments quickly and cheaply, even with low internet connections. Mobile network operating data shows mobile money transactions in Africa soared 39% to $700 billion in 2021. Read more
3. Bitcoin white paper is hiding in Apple’s modern macOS
Andy Baio discovered that Satoshi Nakamoto’s original white paper is hidden in every Mac OS release since Mojave in 2018. He discovered it by accident while trying to fix his printer, when he changed the media type from “Photo” to “Document”. This discovery has sent shockwaves through the tech community and sparked a renewed interest in Bitcoin and its origins. If you are a Mac user, don’t wait any longer to discover the hidden Bitcoin white paper that’s been right under your nose all along. Baio said there is “virtually nothing about this online.” He shared a November 2020 Twitter thread from designer Joshua Dickens, who also found the whitepaper, which Baio used to find the file location.
