Here are some interesting news from the African Bitcoin space:
1. IMF Says Zimbabwe Gold-Backed Digital Currency a Potential Threat to Financial Stability
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has urged Zimbabwean authorities to weigh the benefits versus risks of issuing a gold-backed digital currency. The IMF warned of several risks that such a digital currency would bring, including macroeconomic and financial stability risks, legal and operational risks, governance risks, and the cost of forgone FX reserve. The warning marks the second time the Bretton Woods institution has chastised an African country for adopting a non-conventional currency management approach. Read more.
2. Africa Moves to Lightning, Stablecoins as Bitcoin Transaction Fees Soar
Bitcoin (BTC) users in Africa are increasingly moving to the Lightning Network and stablecoins as transaction fees have soared to their highest level in two years. This is due to the introduction of ordinals on Bitcoin, a protocol that allows for the creation of non-fungible tokens and BRC-20 tokens, associated with some memecoins, on the Bitcoin network. Traders are also affected, as most exchanges don’t yet have Lightning and some trades are too expensive to settle. The Bitcoin fees have increased significantly, leading to less decentralization of the network in Africa. Transactions have been congested or liquidity has run dry, and users of the Muun wallet have been charged high fees due to congestion on the mempool. However, many in Africa see the fee increase as a potential net benefit for adoption, as it supercharges the shift towards Lightning network integration and other solutions. Read More.
3. 4 African Projects Receive $80,000 in Grants from the Bitcoin Development Fund by Human Rights Foundation
HRF has allocated over $2.7 million in BTC and USD to over 80 developers, educators, and open-source initiatives worldwide since 2020. 4 of the grants are set to benefit African projects: Bitcoin Innovation Hub Uganda, Bitcoin Sénégal, Bitcoin in Africa Show, and Bitcoin Dada Kenya. The next round of grants will be unveiled in August 2023. The Bitcoin Development Fund aims to expedite the development of privacy-preserving technologies for Bitcoin users and enhance infrastructure to make Bitcoin more accessible. Read more.
