Hello African Bitcoiners,

As we wrap up the first quarter of 2023, we want to celebrate you for your Bitcoin journey and thank you for sharing some of it with us. For many of us, Bitcoin is not just a tool for financial empowerment; it is also a symbol of hope and possibility for our continent which has suffered extortion and exclusion from the global financial order for far too long. And by embracing Bitcoin, we are taking control of our financial futures and challenging the status quo of a system that has failed us time and time again.

During the period of January to March 2023, which marks the first quarter of the year, our focus was on establishing the necessary structures that we deemed essential to realize our goal of building a trusted, sustainable community which makes Bitcoin more accessible to the people of Africa.

We are now reflecting on our accomplishments and experiences thus far. Discover how our first quarter unfolded below!

1. Celebrating 3 Africa Free Routing Nodes

We began the Africa Free Routing Nodes project with nothing more than a desire to light up the Africa Lightning node map, and having three live nodes and processing almost 10,000 transactions for Africa last week alone is a significant accomplishment for us. Not only because these nodes help route free Bitcoin transactions in Africa and improve the speed of lightning transactions in Africa. But also because the fees for opening channels with any of our nodes fund Bitcoin education in Africa. Support us by opening a channel with any of our nodes.

2. 150+ Graduate from our Bitcoin for Beginners Course

Our Bitcoin for Beginners is an educational course designed to teach Africans about Bitcoin, how it works, and how to use it safely and effectively. The fact that we have recorded over 300 signups and 150+ graduates  for this course shows that there is a growing interest in Bitcoin and the potential benefits it offers. Sign up for our Bitcoin for Beginners course.

3. 80+ on the Million Sat Challenge

The Million Sat Challenge is an initiative we designed to encourage Africans to accumulate and hold the key to at least one million sats. Our goal for the quarter was to have 100 people on the challenge.  It’s been two weeks since we launched, and already we have recorded over 80 signups and interest from 14 African countries. The fact that over 80 people have signed up for the challenge shows that there is a growing interest in Bitcoin and a desire to learn more about it. If you haven’t, please Join our Million Sat Challenge.

4. Site Restructure

Restructuring a website is no small feat, and we are proud to announce that we have successfully restructured our site this quarter. One of the primary goals of the restructuring process was to improve our user experience. We wanted to make it easier for our users to navigate our site and find the information they need quickly and easily. To achieve this goal, we updated the design and layout of our site to make it more modern, streamlined, and visually appealing. Check out our brand new website structure.

5. 1 Million Sat Donation from Bitcoin Beach Wallet

Bitcoin Beach Wallet became an official sponsor of our course this quarter and generously donated 1 million sats towards Bitcoin education in Africa. This amazing contribution has enabled us to extend our reach and offer another 100 Africans the opportunity to receive 10,000 sats each for successfully completing  and passing our Bitcoin for Beginners course. These Bitcoin Beach heroes have truly made a significant impact, and their contribution towards spreading the knowledge of Bitcoin is invaluable. We cannot thank them enough for their kindness and dedication towards empowering Africans through Bitcoin education. Become a sponsor today.

Here are some interesting news from the African Bitcoin space:

1. Google Trends Data Reveals Searches for ‘Banking Crisis’ ‘Bank Runs’ Skyrocket

Google Trends data reveals a significant increase in public interest in the U.S. banking crisis, with searches skyrocketing. The surge in public interest is attributed to the collapse of three banks: Silvergate Bank, Signature Bank, and Silicon Valley Bank. People are asking Google various related questions, such as “What happens to my money if banks collapse?,” “What are the negative effects of a banking crisis?,” and “Which US. banks have collapsed?” Google Trends Data Reveals Searches for ‘Banking Crisis,’ ‘Bank Runs,’ Skyrocket. Google Trends data on March 19, 2023, 30-day statistics, worldwide for the search term “bank failure.” Read more.

2. After Presidential Rebuke, Nigeria’s Central Bank Says Demonetized Naira Banknotes Still Legal Tender

The legal-tender-confusion saga currently ongoing in Nigeria is an example of the kind of madness one will never have to worry about with Bitcoin. The Central Bank of Nigeria has said the recently demonetized  banknotes will remain legal tender until December 31, 2023, following a rebuke of the CBN by the outgoing Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari. The CBN initially did not issue a statement directing banks and the public to accept the old notes, leading to speculation that the central bank would not abide by the court’s decision for old banknotes to remain legal tender until December 2023. However, the Nigerian presidency tweeted that the president had not instructed the Attorney General and the CBN Governor to disobey any court orders involving the government and other parties. Read more.

3. South African Rand Plunges to New 2023 Low Versus the US Dollar

The exchange rate of the South African rand against the U.S. dollar recently plunged to a new 2023 low of 18.636 units for every dollar, making it one of the worst-performing African currencies in 2023. This is due to South Africa’s power shortages and the country’s recent grey-listing by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed the country’s first minister of electricity, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, to help facilitate the coordination of entities working towards finding a solution. Read more.

4. Bitcoin Up By Over 30% in 7 Days Amid Increased Pressure on the Banking System

Bitcoin value has risen by over 30%, as of this writing, due to increasing pressure on the fractional reserve banking system brought on by rising interest rates. This has come after several banks, such as Silvergate Bank, Silicon Valley Bank, Signature Bank, First Republic Bank, and Credit Suisse, have faced shutdowns and rescues, leading to a banking contagion into the crypto space. Additionally, Binance has converted over $1 billion of U.S. dollar stablecoins to Bitcoin, Ether, and other cryptos, supporting the narrative that as banks fail, more people want to opt out and buy bitcoin. Despite the market turbulence, Bitcoin continues to prove as a way to opt out of systemic global bank risks. Read report.
