Now for some of the latest news from the African Bitcoin space:

1. Bitcoin Gains Traction in West Africa with Educational Drive

Bitcoin adoption in West Africa is dominated by Nigeria, but anti-French sentiment is also affecting Bitcoin education efforts in French-speaking West Africa. Senegal has opened its first physical Bitcoin exchange and education center, Bitique, and plans to host another Bitcoin Forum in Dakar in December. In Benin, a country of 13 million people, the Bitcoin-only Bitcoin Mastermind conference is set to take place next month. The growing number of Senegalese turning to Bitcoin as a savings tool and exchange is also on the up. The emphasis in West African countries is on physical meetups and real-life interaction, with Bitcoin Mastermind founder Loïc Kassamoto stating that deeper levels of financial education and demonstrating how West Africans could use a decentralized currency like Bitcoin are through interactions in the real world. Read More.

2. EXPLAINER | A Look at the CFA Franc: How it Works, African Countries Involved, and Controversies

Bitcoin stands out as the optimal solution for Africa to break free from the chains of neo-colonialism. The CFA Franc, utilized by 14 African nations, has ignited controversy due to its operational mechanisms, participating countries, and the contentious issues it has ignited. Functioning within a fixed exchange rate system, the CFA Franc anchors its value to the French Franc and subsequently to the Euro, with the intent of fostering stability and mitigating currency oscillations. Yet, this system has been marred by disputes stemming from constrained monetary independence, obligatory deposits held in the French Treasury, and the historical burdens of neo-colonialism. Read more.

4. US Dollar to Remain Major Global Currency, South Africa’s BRICS Sherpa Says

South Africa’s BRICS Sherpa has stated that the US dollar will remain a major global currency at the upcoming BRICS summit in Johannesburg. The group will discuss trade in national currencies and the expansion of the bloc of emerging economies, but de-dollarization is not on the agenda. The BRICS summit will also focus on the expansion of the bloc of emerging economies, and the diplomat doesn’t see this as a challenge to any other organization. The group’s New Development Bank (NDB) aims to bring the share of domestic currencies to a third of its lending in the next couple of years. BRICS will also focus on whether to induct more countries, with the heads of state and government of 40 other nations confirmed. Read more.
