Here are some interesting news from the African Bitcoin space:

1. Paxful Personally Returns Celsius Funds for Paxful Earn Customers

Paxful, the global peer-to-peer Bitcoin platform, announced today that it is giving nearly nine Bitcoin to its Paxful Earn users impacted by the Celsius collapse. The funds will be sent to Paxful Wallets this week. Paxful announced Paxful Earn in 2021, a partnership with Celsius that allowed users to earn a yield on their Bitcoin. When Celsius collapsed, users who had opted-in were unable to withdraw their funds from Celsius. This January, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Martin Glenn ruled that assets in Celsius Earn Accounts belonged to Celsius’ bankruptcy estate, not to the users. Read more.

2. Nigerian crypto investors question central bank’s decision to flag P2P users


Nigerian crypto investors have expressed concerns about the Central Bank of Nigeria flagging their bank accounts in relation to the Flutterwave hack. A motion  was filed and granted in support of Flutterwave’s claims, leading to 107 accounts being frozen. This has discouraged P2P usage in the country to avoid account seizure. However, Nigerians are finding  ways forward and still maintain their leading position as the largest crypto hub of Africa through the use of P2P platforms. Read more
                                                                                                       

3. BRICS Nations Working on Creating New Currency to Be Discussed at Next Leaders Summit


The BRICS nations which includes South Africa, are reportedly exploring the development of a new currency, with plans to discuss the matter at the next BRICS leaders’ summit. According to a top Russian official, the first step towards this transition is the adoption of settlements in national currencies. The next step could potentially involve the introduction of a new digital or alternative currency in the near future. It might be important for this Nations to consider the potential benefits of Bitcoin. With its decentralized and borderless nature, Bitcoin offers a unique opportunity to reimagine the way we conduct financial transactions. Read more.
