Here are some interesting news from the African Bitcoin space:

1. Kenyan President William Ruto Urges African Countries to Commence Process to Ditch the Dollar

Kenyan President William Ruto has called on fellow African leaders to start taking steps aimed at replacing the U.S. dollar with an alternative payment solution known as the Pan-African Payments and Settlement System (PAPSS). This alternative settlement system, which was launched in Jan. 2022, allows African countries to use their respective currencies when trading among themselves. Ruto suggested that African countries can commence the process of ditching the dollar by encouraging central banks and commercial banks to join PAPSS. He also suggested that the “arduous task of currencies” will be left to Afreximbank, a pan-African multilateral trade finance institution. Read more.

2. Africans Are Pioneering The Bright, Yet Complicated, Green Future Of Bitcoin Mining


Africa’s underdeveloped electrical infrastructure offers a lucrative opportunity for bitcoin miners using renewable energy and off-grid technologies. Bitcoin mining is one of the world’s most sustainable tech industry sectors, with 58.9% of the global energy consumption associated with it coming from renewables. In Nigeria, the bitcoin industry offers unique ways to tackle urbanization issues with homegrown solutions, such as building micro grids powered by renewable energy sources in rural communities beyond the reach of main power grids. This symbiosis between bitcoin miners and remote communities attracts hobbyists and companies that both see vast growth potential for the bitcoin industry across Africa. Read more.

3. Bitcoin ATMs Witness Surge In Numbers For The First Time In 2023

The global count of Bitcoin ATMs has reached a new peak of over 35,000 operational machines, according to Coin ATM Radar. This is a significant surge after hovering below the 34,000 mark since March. The trend had been on a downward trajectory since December, but was reversed with an increase of nearly 1,400 machines in May and an additional 278 in the first few days of June. Bitcoin ATMs have become popular for users to conveniently buy and sell BTC using fiat cash or cards. Bitcoin ATMs are a more private alternative to traditional exchanges due to their lack of KYC data. Read more.
